Schutz to Schultz

Louis Schutz (with umlaut over u) was born 15 December, 1856 in Germany, probably in the Hamburg area to Frederick and Catharina Schutz.  He married Mary Charlotta Louisa Werner in 1884 in Germany.  He emigrated alone to New York on 2 June 1884 and by 1885 he was in involved in real estate in Brooklyn, New York.  Either he returned to Germany or his wife traveled to New York during this time as their daughter, Katchen Emma was born in 1886 in Germany.  His wife and daughter subsequently followed him to New York.  He became a U.S. citizen 13 April, 1887 in Brooklyn.  In addition to real estate, various newspaper ads between 1885 and 1896 indicated he was a notary public, sold insurance, acted as a banker and passenger and insurance agent and a lawyer, sometimes using the name Schuetz!

Louis became one of three men who signed (now using the name Schultz) a long-term lease to run Hilton Park Beer Garden in 1897, later known as Olympic Park.  In 1897-1898, the family moved from New York to Newark, working as a real estate developer in the late 1890s and early 1900's in Newark, Maplewood and Union.  They moved to Union in 1900 and then to 1366 Springfield Avenue, Irvington in 1909 and opened a nursery.

Louis and Mary had a total of ten children, with Louis, Frederick, Emma and Charles born in New York, followed by Frederick W., William, Rudolph, Charlotte and Gordon born in New Jersey.

Louis died 23 September 1909 of tuberculosis of the larynx and was buried 26 September 1909 at Clinton Cemetery in Irvington.

Mary remarried Otto C. Buchner before 1920 and after his death, she married John W. Bunce.  She died 23 July 1950 and was buried in Clinton Cemetery in Irvington.
